Treasure Trove Uncovers World’s Oldest Beer

Is this the world's oldest bottle of beer?

The salvage team responsible for raising a cache of vintage Champagne from the bottom of the ocean have made another discovery this time believed to be a collection of fully intact beer bottles. If the new find is confirmed it would make it the oldest surviving example of the barley brew and makes the original find even more remarkable.

The discovery came when one of the bottles broke while lifting it to the surface - it revealed a dark brown liquid almost certain to be beer. The shipwreck is lying in about 50 meters of water off the coast of Finland and the cargo of Champagne was believed to be intended for the Russian Imperial Court - perhaps they had a taste for a cold one too? Apparently, they did. Click here to learn about Russian Imperial Stout.
