Pernod Ricard Brings The Blanc Back

Lillet Blanc

For months thirsty Aussie tipplers have had to do it tough being unable to enjoy Corpse Reviver #2s or 20th Century Cocktails due to a national shortage of the key ingredient Lillet Blanc. Thanks to efforts of the Pernod Ricard’s National Spirits ambassador Ben Davidson, however, this aromatised wine is available on Australian shores once more.

Lillet Blanc, was first created in the late 19th Century in Podensac, a village of 3,000 inhabitants that is in the Graves region of Bordeaux, 30km south of the city. Still made there to this day this classic Bordeaux aperitif is made from about 85 percent wine (predominately Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon) and 15 percent fruit liqueurs which include a base of sweet oranges from Valencia in Spain, green oranges from Morocco and Tunisia, bitter oranges from Haiti and cinchona bark (or quinine) from rainforests in the Peruvian Andes.

Lillet reached its height of popularity in the 1930’s whence the aforementioned cocktails were created. Whilst Lillet’s popularity floundered after WWII things started have to pick up again in recent years with Pernod Ricard purchasing Lillet only last year.

Hows the Angostura Bitters shortage going down there? London had pretty much dried up thanks to certain Match employess buying bottles by the 100’s in massive liquor stores. I know Dean Callan bought himself a case. Just for kicks i ordered a case over here in France and it came. Looks like theres plenty here still..

The owner of Island2Island, who imports Angostura Bitters in Australia, told me he has about six months worth of stock.
