Glass Ban for 70 ‘High Risk’ Brisbane Venues

broken-wine-bottle

The Courier Mail reported this morning (28 July) that more than 70 “high risk” licensed venues across Brisbane, including the Qantas Club, will be the first targeted in the State Government’s ban on glass.

Popular late-night venues across the City and Valley are top of the list, as well as suburban hot spots such as the International Players Cabaret and Sportsbar in Ipswich and Pine Rivers United Sports Club at Strathpine. High-risk venues include all those that provide entertainment, are allowed to trade past 3am or have a history of violent incidents.

The call for plastic and shatterproof glassware has been in response to a surge in glassings in Queensland. The move has prompted mixed reactions from venue owners, with many thinking that patrons who engage in such violence should be punished more severely. Liquor Licensing is yet to determine whether the ban on glass will apply permanently, or after a certain time. But it’s understood different licensees will have different conditions and that the ban will include stubbies and alcopops.

I believe a few other clubs have been added to this list, like Cloudland. I can understand a lot of people will be upset by this - I only hope it reduces the overall level of violence.
