Launch of Square One Organic Vodka & Square One Cucumber
Vanguard Luxury Brands (headed up by the eminently popular and all-round nice guy Mr James France) officially launched two new spirits - Square One Organic Vodka and Square One Cucumber - to add to their stable which already includes Flor de Cana Rum, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, Simple Syrup Co. and Aviation Gin.

Now in its 9th year, the Bartender Magazine Australian Bar Awards covers 23 categories with seven finalists in each, recognising excellence across a broad spectrum of the hospitality industry.
Warning: Small Bars are Dangerous
CEO of Drinkwise Australia, Chris Watters, has echoed calls to halt the development of small bars in Brisbane, following several reports earlier this week that Queensland Hotels Association is opposed to the idea of European style small bars, like those in Melbourne. Plans to foster a more sophisticated nightlife with a focus on smaller more boutique bars officially launched in Queensland this month.
Council Restricts Sugarmill’s Alfresco Drinking
Last year, the Sugarmill Hotel was granted a trial outdoor licence by the Council to put a beer garden in the mall which is an alcohol-free zone. At a council meeting at the beginning of the month, the licence was extended by 12 months but with some severe new restrictions in response to residential complaints.
Glass Ban for 70 ‘High Risk’ Brisbane Venues
The Courier Mail reported this morning (28 July) that more than 70 “high risk” licensed venues across Brisbane, including the Qantas Club, will be the first targeted in the State Government’s ban on glass.
The Beresford Hotel, Sydney
Nestled in between the colourful Oxford Street scene and funky Surry Hills set is The Beresford Hotel. While a historic site, father and son team Ashod Nassibian and Gerry Nass, are not covering old ground with this new venture. In this latest incarnation The Beresford Hotel has been transformed into a 1920s New York-style pub with a fine Italian trattoria, huge outdoor spaces, a soon to open live music venue and function area all complimented by a bar team and drinks selection that one would expect in a top cocktail bar.
‘Swillhouse’ Rejected as Conservatism Ramps Up
As the conservative wave continues to sweep the country, “the fun police” have rejected a small bar name that was meant to be a cheeky nod to Sydney’s drinking history. This weekend’s Sun Herald (July 26) reported that: “the name Swillhouse was deemed “inappropriate” by the Casino, Liquor and Gaming Control Authority, the first such refusal since the body replaced the old liquor board and licensing court system a year ago.”
