Stephany Canfell and Cameron Birt, the team behind the Australian Bar Awards 2008 Bar of the Year, The Bowery, have turned their hands to a new venue, well actually two venues in one – The Buffalo Club on Level 1 and The Sky Room on Level 2 at 234 Wickham Street. Opening in January this year, The Buffalo Club features the food prowess of Chef Ryan Squires from the lauded Californian restaurant French laundry. Upstairs is The Sky Room, where there is no food but drinks by two of Australia’s leading cocktail bartenders – Bar Manager of the Year, Mathew Hewitt and everyone’s favourite Scot, Barry Chalmers. Unlike the more lively Bowery, The Sky Room is all about relaxed charm – palm trees, balcony, green couches and retro summer cocktails that all scream resort holiday. The focus is on the cocktails, but there is also a good selection of wines (particularly of the bubbly variety) and a handful of boutique brews. Another cracking venue from a well-oiled machine.
